The Samsung Galaxy A8 2018 has the look of the Samsung Galaxy S8. You will only notice the difference when you have both phones in your hands.  However, the A8 has slightly bigger bezels than the S8. Although it does not look as good as the S8, it is one of the most beautiful phone in its class.  The body of the A8 is made from metal and glass.  The display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5 and the metal is aluminum.  The Samsung A8 2018 has IP68 water resistance rating. This means that it is a phone that can survive in 5 feet of water for 30 minutes. The fingerprint scanner on the Samsung Galaxy A8 is at the back, just below the camera.

The display is bright and vivid. The Galaxy A8 is graced by a 5.6 inch super AMOLED screen, referred to by Samsung as the “Infinity Display”.  This is marketing name used by the Korean phone maker for phones with 18:5:9 aspect ratio. This display is tall and narrow.  In 2018, smartphone manufacturers are focused on making almost bezel-less displays. We have already seen this in high end Samsung smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.  There are also a few mid-range and budget phones in Kenya with 18:9 aspect ratio e.g. Oppo F5, Oppo F5 Youth, Tecno Camon CM, Infinix Hot S3 etc.

Software, Hardware & Performance

Like other Samsung phones, this smartphone features the TouchWiz user interface. The interface looks really good but does ot offer an experience as is good as what is offered by UI’s from other phone companies.  This is something that Samsung Mobile has been struggling with over the years.  But the software on The A8 2018 is much better than what we have seen in previous Samsung phones.  Samsung Galaxy A8 2018 runs on Android v7.0 Nougat out of the box. This is shame since most phones released in 2018 run on Android 8 Oreo. Fortunately, this phone will be upgrade to Android Oreo soon.

The Galaxy A8 comes with Samsung Exynos 7885 chipset. This chipset is power efficient and fairly powerful.  This is coupled with 4GB of RAM. Galaxy A8 is not a bad phone for a average gamers. However, if you are die hard gamer, it may not be the phone for you.  The Samsung Galaxy A8 has 32GB on board storage. Pre-installed software take up approximately 10GB.

Cameras Of The Samsung A8 2018

This phone is the cheaper version of the Samsung Galaxy S8. This begs the question, does it have cameras that are as good as those found in the S8?

The Samsung Galaxy A8 2018 has a 16MP camera on the rear. This camera features Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) and has an f/1.7 lens.  On the front, there is dual camera system that consists of a 16MP and an 8MP cameras. Images captured by the front facing camera can be blurred, a feature that makes this phone quite cool for selfie lovers.

Well, the A8 captures very good photos during the day in places with adequate light. These photos are almost as good as this captured by the S8. However, in low light places, the A8 cameras struggle.  The images captured at night by the Galaxy A8 can’t compete with those capture by the Galaxy S8.

Battery

The Samsung Galaxy A8 comes with a 3000mAh battery. This battery can easily power it through a day.  If you are not a heavy user, the battery can last for longer.  The A8 comes with a fast charger.  You can charge it from 0% to 100% in one and a half hours.
